Dear Reader,

I have spent my entire career in the field of cosmetology and managed several multi-million dollar cosmetics stores.  Many times when I meet new people, and they find out what I do, they tell me what skin care they are using and how much money they spent on it and then ask: so how do I get rid of these wrinkles? What that tells me is that even though they use expensive brands, their skin issues continue and do not improve. Many women feel that there is just no hope to stop their skin from aging. No matter what they do and how much they pay, nothing changes—their skin continues to age.

So what is the problem and what can we do to finally put the brakes on the skin aging process?

Unfortunately, skin care today is too focused to “revealing new skin” by continuously using retinol, acids, peels, scrubs, etc to file away the surface cells and expose the new skin cells underneath. What that does, however, is exhaust skin cells’ ability to divide and produce new healthy cells. Eventually this process stops working and then no matter what you do—it’s too late and the T-cells can only divide so many times. After that it just does not matter what moisturizer, serum or other anti-aging product you use—the skin is exhausted and ages rapidly.

Instead of peeling away skin layers why not go the opposite way and “feed” the skin nutrients that it needs to better support collagen? What can skin do with acids, silicones and other chemicals? Absolutely nothing!  But give it some lipids and moisture and it will do wonders! Lipids are used to support collagen fibers in our skin, much like a good quality mattress is supported by lots of filling. Research shows that once skin is given the nourishment and moisture that it needs, collagen levels rise dramatically in all age groups, and that includes 80-90 year olds.

So here are three conditions that must be met for an anti-aging product to really work:IMG_3696.jpg

First of all, the active ingredients must be able to penetrate the skin surface and reach deep into the derma, where the cells can absorb them.  Many natural ingredients, including oils, are unable to do so on their own.  Their molecules are too large, so they just sit on top of your skin. They are like wagons without a locomotive.  They must be attached to a molecule that will ensure “safe passage” for them through the cell membranes.  The active ingredients must be attached to monosaccharaides that skin cells readily accept as food, and the effect will be amazing. That’s why it is not enough to just use coconut or other oils on the skin.  The product must penetrate deeper, so proper formulation is critical.

Secondly, the product must be fresh when it gets to the client.  It must not contain ingredients that could oxidize all the valuable active ingredients.  Natural skincare that contains water or glycerin as first or second ingredient has too much oxygen for anything of value to survive and be effective.   This free oxygen reacts with everything very quickly, and unfortunately such products are rendered ineffective before they ever leave the store shelf.  It may look nice and smell great, but it will provide little to none actual benefit to the client. Instead, water should be encapsulated inside the lipid molecules (Cupuacu butter is the best source of encapsulated water), so that it has a chance to make it all the way where the skin cells can actually use it.

And last but not least, the product must be 100% chemical and preservative free, otherwise it does not deserve to be called natural. There are very few truly natural preservatives that humanity has been using for centuries—sugar, vinegar, salt and a handful of others.  Obviously it would be highly unlikely to see them used in a moisturizer, so look for products that are preservative free.  Usually, if there is no water or glycerin in the product, it won’t need preservatives either, since nothing will mold in the absence of water.  Look for products that use only active ingredients and you will find that they are highly effective and do not oxidize while sitting on the store shelf.  These products should also last you much longer than a conventional water/glycerin moisturizers—since there are no fillers, you need a lot less of it for daily use, so that’ll save you some money!  My moisturizer lasts me at least 6 months—twice as long as the conventional moisturizers used to!  My skin loves it—my fine lines disappeared and the deep wrinkles I used to have are much less pronounced!  My skin looks fresh and firm and I am getting compliments!

I know these truly natural products are hard to find—almost everything is made with water and glycerin now, plus a bunch of preservatives. You can always tell a truly natural product by its color—it is never white or clear, but usually a nice creamy yellow. Nothing in nature is pure white and you cannot purify natural ingredients to be white or they will be oxidized and ineffective. Aloe is green, chamomile is yellow and so on.  Take a good look at the tester and you will be able to tell pretty easily.  When you touch the product it will feel more substantial that your usual watery moisturizers—it feels different, potent!
